The Haute-Garonne is located in the southwestern part of France, along the Spanish border and about 150 km from the country of Andorra.Carved from solid French limestone, the benitier features a cavetto cornice beneath the circular opening. The molding, which is adorned with recessed niches, slightly hangs over the wide-lobed gadrooning beneath. Four S-scroll protuberances, embellished with beading, emerge from the niches before terminating on top of the gadrooning. The short neck has a protrusion with foliate motifs, above the thick, circular base with widely spaced spiral fluting that encircles the multiple layers of recessed molding.Based on the accumulation of moss and the varying levels of patina on the stone, our 18th century benitier has been used frequently as a planter, most likely outdoors. It can also be used as a simple garden ornament or fountain basin, or placed inside and used as a lovely stone sink. less
