A very IMPORTANT topographical pencil sketch, drawn from nature by Augustus Kollner (1813-1906) A period image depicting the gate of … more A very IMPORTANT topographical pencil sketch, drawn from nature by Augustus Kollner (1813-1906) A period image depicting the gate of the historical rural Green Mount Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland. Established on March 15, 1838 and dedicated on July 13, 1839. The gateway was designed by Robert Cary Long Jr. and built 1838/39. The Hilltop Chapel, designed by the architectural firm J. Rudolph Niernsee & J. Crawford Nielson was erected after 1848. Both monuments are in Gothic Revival style, reflecting the fashionable at the time romantic taste, glorifying the Medieval past and its monumental buildingsA horse-riding couple, a stagecoach and a carriage in natural settings right in front of the newly built Main Entrance, place the passed moment sometime between the years 1838-1848. Please notice that The Hilltop Chapel to the right of the gateway is not built yet. NOTE: A lithograph by lithographer Laurent Deroy (1797-1886) published in New York & Paris c.1848 by Goupil, Vilbert & Co., is based on the here discussed drawing by Augustus Kollner.
