It was made around 1907, decorated with high carat gold flowers and leaves allover with black highlights on the heavy gilding. The design is representative of the art nouveau period. The set is beautifully hand painted and artists’ signed. As can be seen from the signatures, each piece is painted by different artists, which was quite common for studio artists to be assigned the same pattern. As can be seen from the signatures, each piece is painted by different artists, which was quite common for studio artists to be assigned the same pattern. The stamp on the bottom reads “Stouffer Fine China”, the very first company seal used from 1905 until 1907. Both items are in excellent and pristine condition. There are no signs of chips, cracks, or crazing. The gold layer is present and vibrant.J.H.Stouffer Company, Chicago, was founded in 1905 by Jacob H. Stouffer. He was born in the village of Adeline, Illinois, in 1866 as one of nine children. He was 14 y.o. when he ran away from home and got hired as a shipboy in order to go to Europe to study art under famous dutch, french and Italian masters. Back i the U.S. he brought with him three young European artists and a huge cargo of various European porcelain. In 1902 he founded his first business, J. H. Stouffer Co., China and Glass Wholesalers. When more and more immigrant artists started coming to Chicago looking for jobs in china decoration, Jacob founded The Stouffer Studio. It was a small workshop, located at 3000 Lake Park Avenue in Chicago, where they painted glass pieces and blank porcelain pieces, transforming them into pieces of art. The Stouffer Studio quickly became successful not only due to the artistic quality of its products, but also due to its massive use of solid high carat gold as the preferred color. Jacob died at age 46 in 1912 and his wife Marietta (Mary D. Stouffer) became president, followed by Finlay Drummond in 1915. The company survived World War I, the Great Depression and World War II, and remained a premier world-famous china decorating establishment until 1952, when it ceased to exist. less
